Education:

The BSO continues its commitment to arts education in the community by offering a variety of programs for both students and teachers.

5th Grade Concerts

The Brevard Symphony Orchestra, partnering with the Brevard County School Board and through support received from local foundations and businesses, offers a free symphonic concert at the King Center each February for all 5th grade public school students.

A study guide is developed for all teachers which integrates all learning aspects of a symphony performance from biographies of the composers to seating within the orchestra, performance etiquette and much more. All this information is blended, with musical examples, into class lesson plans. This allows students time, in advance of the concert, to learn about what they will soon be enjoying, therefore enhancing their learning experience. For many students this is their first visit to the King Center for the Performing Arts as well as their first symphonic performance. All Study Guide materials incorporate the Sunshine State Standards and connection to FCAT curriculums.

This concert is also open to private and home school students for a nominal fee. Chaperones are free. Advance reservations are necessary.

BSO Kids! Concert Club:

The Orchestra invites Brevard County students in grades 4-12 to join the BSO Kids!

While a few weeks have passed since our magnificent Season Finale on April 13th, the memory of that concert has really stayed with me! I was so proud of the way the orchestra performed, especially in Debussy’s La Mer. La Mer is a benchmark piece – it takes a truly outstanding group of musicians to do it justice – it’s so sophisticated and nuanced. I knew from the very first rehearsal that we were going to have a very special week.

My favorite moment in La Mer is the last minute or so of the first movement. It was absolutely perfect at the performance – the best we’d played it all week. A couple of the orchestra members told me after the concert they could tell I was pleased – “the look on your face was priceless!” It was an incredible moment! Of course, the entire concert was filled with special moments – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was magical, our soloist, Jennifer Frautschi was mesmerizing – it really was a very memorable performance, and a superb way for our DREAM Season to conclude!

On Sunday, May 5th, your BSO gave another great performance on a beautiful afternoon at the Windsor Polo Field in Vero. Each year, the BSO is hired to play for the Annual May Pops Concert at Windsor – a fundraiser for the Indian River Hospital Foundation. For the past few years, we’ve been joined by a stellar Broadway vocalist – on Sunday, we were joined by the amazing Hugh Panaro. Hugh holds the distinction of being one of a handful of actors who have played the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera on Broadway for multiple years. This was our first time working with Hugh, and he was unbelievable. He has a great voice with wonderful stage presence - and he is a super-nice guy! As usual, the musicians of your Brevard Symphony Orchestra performed brilliantly, and the audience wanted more, more more! It was a great afternoon, and I look forward to bringing Hugh to our Subscription Series in the future so the entire BSO Family can enjoy his amazing talents!

Thank you for your tireless and enthusiastic support of your Brevard Symphony Orchestra! Please make plans to join us at our next performance on Thursday, July 4th at Cocoa Riverfront Park as we CELEBRATE our 60th Anniversary Season!

This Saturday’s concert by your Brevard Symphony Orchestra – Dreams Realized – brings our 2012-13 Dream Season to a close. Our program features five works by some of the best-known composers from France – Paul Dukas, Camille Saint-Saens, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie and Claude Debussy. All five compositions were premiered within a span of less than 40 years and yet there is an incredible diversity in the style and sound of each piece. Each composer treats the orchestra in a very different and unique manner. Some of these pieces are brilliantly-scored showpieces for the orchestra, and will highlight the fantastic talents of the more than 75 musicians you’ll see and hear onstage.

The concert begins with the spectacular tone poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas. We all know this music courtesy of Walt Disney’s Fantasia – and the story depicted in that animated sequence with Mickey Mouse and all those broomsticks and buckets of water is virtually the same story Dukas followed (based on a poem by Goethe). Featured prominently are three bassoons and a contrabassoon as they bring the broomsticks to life. It’s always so much fun to perform this piece!

Violinist Jennifer Frautschi, who last appeared with the BSO in January of 2009, returns to join the orchestra in performances of two terrific showpieces – The Havanaise by Saint-Saens and Ravel’s Tzigane. The Havanaise is a lilting Spanish-flavored piece, while the Ravel is a gypsy-inspired tour de force. We’re delighted to welcome Jennifer back to Brevard County!

After intermission, we’ll perform two short pieces originally composed for piano by Erik Satie and orchestrated by Claude Debussy. These two Gymnopedies are incredibly beautiful and tranquil – the second of the pair is quite recognizable. It was adapted by the group Blood Sweat and Tears as Variations on a Theme by Erik Satie for an album released in 1968, which went on to win a Grammy award. As groovy as that rendition is, I think you’ll like our performance even more!

To close our concert, we’ll perform Claude Debussy’s groundbreaking masterpiece La Mer – a set of three symphonic sketches that vividly depict different aspects of the sea. With La Mer¸ Debussy created sounds, harmonies and orchestral colors that had not been heard before, and the structure of each movement evolves in an unprecedented way. There is a wonderful sense of flow in this music that is achieved by a combination of these unique elements – orchestration, harmony, melodic and structural transformation. It is a work that offers many challenges to the musicians individually and collectively and stands as a wonderful benchmark of how immensely talented our orchestra has become. I can’t wait to share this program with you – you’ll love it!

Thank you for the loyalty and support you continue to show our incredible orchestra and organization. I look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at the King Center this Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 8:00pm!

On Saturday, March 16, 2013, your Brevard Symphony Orchestra will present a pair of concerts featuring two concerti performed by one of the finest horn players in the world – William Purvis. The other works on the program feature the orchestral horns – thus, our concert is titled Hornucopia!

Richard Strauss is best known for his sprawling orchestral tone poems for large orchestra, but he also wrote several important works for smaller forces. Strauss completed his Horn Concerto No. 1 at the age of 19. It is a terrific showpiece for the horn and a work full of romantic melodies and heroic gestures for the soloist. Like other works on this program, the Finale of this concerto features the solo horn imitating the sound of hunting horn calls. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote four concerti for the Horn, all for the same artist, a longtime family friend named Ignaz Leutgeb. Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2 was completed in 1783 and also features the characteristic sound of the hunting horn call in its Finale. Both of these concerti are extremely popular with hornists and audiences alike, and we are privileged to have the opportunity to hear them performed by a world-class artist in William Purvis!

Franz Joseph Haydn composed more than 100 symphonies – many with clever titles or nicknames, though very few of those nicknames actually came from Haydn himself. The Symphony No. 73, composed in 1782 for the virtuoso orchestra assembled by Haydn for Prince Esterhazy. This Symphony’s nickname, La Chasse, does originate with Haydn, and is specific to the Finale which opens with a galloping rhythm played by the whole orchestra, followed by the oboes and horns sounding yet another hunting call. This symphony also features brilliant writing for the violins in the first movement, a charming set of variations in the second movement and a graceful Menuet and Trio as the traditional third movement. Unlike most symphonies, this does not end with a bang, but with the sound of the hunting party fading off into the distance.

Our concert opens with the lovely Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner, another Romantic Era composer best-known for gigantic compositions of sweeping emotional power. There is plenty of emotion in the Siegfried Idyll, but they are emotions of a much more intimate and personal nature. This piece was composed as a musical love letter to his wife Cosima. It was premiered on Christmas morning at the Wagner’s home as a birthday gift to Cosima in what sounds like a scene straight out of a Hollywood film. As Cosima slept upstairs, Wagner had a group of fifteen musicians assemble in the living room. They began to play, and the sweet, gentle melodies drifted upstairs, eventually waking Cosima (who later said she thought she was dreaming). Best. Present. Ever!

Our program order will be: Wagner, Strauss, Intermission, Mozart and Haydn. I think it will be a treat to hear the two Romantic works paired together on the first half, with the Classsical works on the second half. It’s a cleverly devised program, and I know it will be performed brilliantly by our musicians and guest artist! This concert is the third on our Matinee Series, so you’ll have two opportunities to hear it – at 2:00pm and 8:00pm on Saturday, March 16th. I look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at the King Center!
