An Important Message from David Schillhammer:

June 2, 2020

Dear Brevard Symphony Family:

Greetings from your Brevard Symphony. I do hope and trust that you and yours are safe and healthy during this unprecedented time of learning to live with COVID-19. The Maestro and the musicians of the BSO miss performing for you and are eager to get back to live music-making. In the meantime, musicians of the BSO have been hard at work at providing virtual musical vignettes from the comfort of their homes. These have been posted on Facebook and sent by email. I hope they have brightened your day as they have mine. There are more to follow as we expand our musical relationship with you.

Speaking of the musicians, I thank so many of you for responding to BSO Cares, our initiative to raise money to provide compensation to the musicians for the activities that had to be cancelled. We were not sure what the response would be, but it turned out to be overwhelming. Over 130 of you made the effort to support the musicians and allowed us to reach our goal of providing 100% compensation relief to 85 impacted musicians. We knew that there is a connection between musicians and patrons, but this response was positively staggering to us. Thank you one and all.

And it appears your appetite for our 20-21 season, including our salute to Beethoven’s 250th birthday, is extremely strong. Indeed, we track our subscriptions sales week to week from the prior year. And at this time, we are 3% ahead of where we were a year ago. It is going to be a stellar season, and we are grateful to all who have renewed their subscription or in many cases, updated their status. I am also happy to note that sales for our December 12 inaugural Holiday Concert are equally strong. We look forward to bringing these concerts to life for you.

Unfortunately, the music will not be returning this summer. The City of Cocoa has cancelled our annual free July 4 concert at Riverfront Park. This concert has been performed for over 25 years, and it will continue on July 4, 2021. We share the loss of this important concert.

The BSO, out of an abundance of caution, has made the decision to postpone Summer Evenings, our three-concert chamber music series at Suntree United Methodist Church. The same programming that was offered for summer 2020 will take place in summer 2021, dates TBD. We place the utmost importance on the health and safety of our musicians, audience members, and staffs of both the BSO and the church. Given the logistics of the series, we felt it was in everyone’s best interest to make this decision now.

I will keep you updated on the activities of the Brevard Symphony moving forward. I realize there are many questions about the future, and we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure a safe and healthy concert-going experience. Thank you for supporting the BSO. We will see you soon.
