BERLIOZ – Roman Carnival Overture | CHOPIN – Piano Concerto No. 1 | RESPIGHI – The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome
Roman Carnival, originally written for the carnival scene in Berlioz’s unsuccessful opera Benvenuto Cellini, is exhilarating for both audience and musicians with its breakneck tempo and beautiful melodies. Chopin wrote nearly 250 works for solo piano, but wrote only two piano concertos, both when he was just 20 years old. He was more comfortable writing for the piano than for orchestra and assigned most of the drama and beauty in the concerto to the solo piano part, resulting in a work that requires both delicacy and virtuosity from the soloist. Respighi is best known today for his orchestral works, including the two on this program: The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome. Fountains depicts four of Rome’s famous fountains at different times of day – dawn, morning, noon, and sunset. Pines allows us to envision not just pine trees around Rome, but all that takes place among the trees, including a military march along the Appian Way, children playing, catacombs in their shade, and moonlight shining through them.
