We started the month with a terrific fundraiser – Symphony for the Palate – the BSO’s annual fundraiser for the presented by our Board of Directors at the Eau Galle Yacht Club. Bethany and I had a great time at the event – the highlight of the evening was the Live Auction featuring Sheriff Wayne Ivey as our auctioneer. He was terrific, and the event raised a lot of money for the orchestra!
The next day was the 6th Annual Melbourne Music Marathon – a unique event that features over 40 musical groups performing along the race course. No, I didn’t run – but I played in a Woodwind Trio for a couple of hours with BSO musicians Lora MacPherson and Nicole Scott. Nicole and Lora have lots of fun arrangements for us to play, including the Theme from Rocky which got lots of positive feedback from the runners. There’s nothing like the sound of a flute, oboe and bassoon playing Gonna Fly Now!
The BSO’s Annual 5th Grade Concerts were February 4-6. Our theme was The Symphony Is All Around You – a program that highlights some of the greatest symphonic music ever written and also demonstrates how students can hear the sounds of the orchestra every day of their lives by keeping their ears open and listening for the instruments playing the themes of TV programs, movie soundtracks and even in their video games. We gave six performances over three days for more than 8,500 enthusiastic students. The kids were attentive and incredibly responsive – the orchestra performed brilliantly and we made a strong connection with our young audience. It was a very special three days!
Last week, we made the big announcement of our upcoming concert beneath Space Shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014. We’ll perform a spectacular space-themed program beneath Atlantis. What an amazing setting – and no other orchestra in the world could do this but YOUR Brevard Symphony Orchestra!. it will be an unforgettable evening – tickets are on sale now and are in short supply, so call the BSO to reserve your ticket for this incredible event!
On Saturday, February 22nd, we’ll present the next concert in our Subscription Series at the King Center. This POPS concert is themed as Vinyl Fever and features fun orchestral arrangements of classic music from the 1950s, 60s and 70s! You’ll hear the orchestra perform music made famous by Elvis, the Beatles, Henry Mancini, Bette Midler, the Carpenters, the Village People and many more! We’ve invited the orchestra to dress in vintage clothing from the 50s, 60s or 70s and we’d also like to invite YOU to dress up as well! Performances are at 2:00 and 8:00.
We’re looking forward to seeing you there for a groovy time!
