Only 1.8% of the music being played on symphony orchestra stages is composed by women. But on this night, these talented women will flood the stage with music from many of the Wonder Women of the Music World. Join BSO violinist Joni Hanze, along with with violinist Olga Ferroni, violist Linda Donahue Kessler, cellist Brenda Higgins, and Helena for an entertaining evening of the lush music of Amy Beach, the picturesque music of Gwyneth Walker, the blues of Billie Holiday, songs from the musical chameleon Lady Gaga, and others.
The program will also include Jennifer Higdon’s Piano Trio. Higdon wrote of it, “Can music reflect colors and can colors be reflected in music? I have always been fascinated with the connection between painting and music. In my composing, I often picture colors as if I were spreading them on a canvas, except I do so with melodies, harmonies and through the instruments themselves. The colors that I have chosen in both movement titles of the Piano Trio and in the music itself reflect very different moods and energy levels, which I find fascinating, as it begs the question, can colors actually convey a mood?”
The women of Helena, a premiere vocal ensemble, have described their group as “a sisterhood of some of Central Florida’s most dauntless singers, an ensemble committed to irradiating gems from all genres of vocal music.”
